Wise UAE is live today: CBUAE-licensed, open for sign-ups, with transparent mid-market-rate transfers. Revolut UAE is not yet available: it holds CBUAE licences (since June 2026) but hasn't opened consumer sign-ups, with full launch expected later in 2026. For UAE expats who need a transfer or multi-currency tool today, Wise is the actual option โ Revolut is a "watch this space." Neither replaces a UAE bank account โ they complement it.
Mid-market exchange rate with a fixed percentage fee displayed upfront. No hidden spread. CBUAE-licensed and open for sign-ups now.
Globally, Revolut offers a multi-currency card, crypto and stock features, and budgeting tools โ but none of this is confirmed for the UAE product until it actually launches.
Wise in the UAE: how it works
Wise (formerly TransferWise) has been available to UAE residents for a number of years and has built a strong reputation for transparent, low-cost international transfers. The core proposition is simple: Wise converts your AED at the mid-market rate (the rate you see on Google) and charges a small, clearly disclosed fee โ typically 0.3โ1.0% depending on the currency corridor.
For UAE expats sending money home regularly, Wise is often the most cost-effective option. The total cost of a transfer is shown before you confirm โ no surprises, no embedded FX spread. UAE banks by comparison charge 1.5โ2.5% embedded in the exchange rate and sometimes a flat fee on top.
Wise's key features for UAE users
- International transfers โ AED to 80+ currencies at mid-market rate
- Wise Account โ multi-currency account with local account details in USD, GBP, EUR, AUD and others (useful for receiving salary or freelance income in foreign currencies)
- Wise debit card โ available in the UAE, allows spending abroad at mid-market rate with 0% fee up to a threshold
- Business account โ widely used by UAE freelancers and small businesses to receive international payments
Wise is not licensed by the UAE Central Bank as a bank but is authorised as a payment institution in the markets where it holds licences (FCA in the UK, EU regulators in Europe). For UAE-resident customers, Wise operates as an international money transfer service. Funds held in a Wise account are safeguarded (held separately from company funds in regulated banks) but are not UAE-insured deposits.
We've tested Wise for UAE transfers across multiple corridors over several years. Read our full review for fee breakdowns, corridor comparison, and who it suits best.

Revolut has been pursuing a UAE licence since 2022 and received Stored Value Facilities and Retail Payment Services licences from the Central Bank of the UAE in June 2026. As of July 2026, the consumer product has not launched โ there is no public sign-up date, and full launch is targeted for later in 2026. This page previously stated Revolut launched in the UAE in 2021; that was inaccurate and has been corrected.
What follows is a description of Revolut's global product (available in the UK, Europe and elsewhere), included as an indication of what the UAE version may resemble once it launches โ not a confirmed UAE feature list.
Revolut's key features globally (not yet confirmed for the UAE)
- Multi-currency account โ hold, exchange, and spend in dozens of currencies from a single account
- Revolut card โ spend internationally at near-interbank FX rates during weekday hours (weekend surcharge of 0.5โ1% applies)
- International transfers โ competitive but typically slightly more expensive than Wise for pure transfer use
- Budgeting tools โ analytics, spending categories, savings vaults
- Revolut <18 โ junior accounts for children (useful for families sending children to school abroad)
- Crypto and stock features โ available on some plans globally (these are Revolut-specific products, not brokerage accounts)

What to use today, and what to expect from Revolut once it launches
Use Wise today when:
- You're making regular monthly transfers of a fixed amount (salary remittance, mortgage payment at home)
- Transparency of fees matters โ you want to see the total cost before confirming
- You receive income in foreign currencies and need a multi-currency account with local account details
- You're a freelancer or contractor billing international clients in GBP, EUR, or USD
Consider Revolut once it launches, if, based on its global product:
- You travel frequently and want a card that works seamlessly across currencies
- You want budgeting tools and spending analytics built into your banking app
- You need a comprehensive multi-currency app for daily financial management
- You have a family with school-age children who might want managed spending accounts
Until Revolut UAE launches:
- Wise is the CBUAE-licensed, transparent option actually available for transfers and multi-currency spending today
- Check back on Revolut's launch status periodically โ we'll update this page with confirmed UAE terms once it's live
Wise is not a full bank in the UAE context. It cannot receive your salary in AED, is not a CBUAE-insured deposit institution, and cannot be your primary financial relationship. You still need a UAE bank account (Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq, etc.) as your salary-receiving and primary bill-payment account. Revolut UAE, once launched, is expected to have similar limitations as a payment institution rather than a bank โ treat both as supplements to a UAE bank account, not replacements.
The biggest money most UAE expats lose in international transfers is not to bank fees โ it's to the embedded exchange rate spread that UAE banks apply without disclosure. Using Wise or Revolut for money transfers saves a meaningful amount every year versus standard UAE bank international wire rates. If you send AED 10,000 per month at a 2% bank spread versus Wise at 0.4%, you save roughly AED 1,920 per year โ not trivial over a decade.

Not yet as a UAE-specific product. Revolut holds Stored Value Facilities and Retail Payment Services licences from the Central Bank of the UAE (granted June 2026), but as of July 2026 has not opened consumer sign-ups โ full launch is targeted for later in 2026. UAE residents can, in the meantime, continue using a European/UK Revolut account, though it remains regulated abroad rather than by the CBUAE, and Revolut's terms may require using the account regulated in your country of residence. This page previously stated Revolut launched in the UAE in 2021; that was inaccurate and has been corrected.
Generally no for Wise (Wise does not have UAE AED receiving accounts). Revolut UAE doesn't exist as a live product yet, so this isn't applicable today โ and once it does launch, most UAE employers are still likely to require salary payments to go to a licensed UAE bank, based on how similar payment institutions operate. You would typically receive salary into a UAE bank, then transfer out via Wise (today) or Revolut (once launched) for international remittances.
Today, this isn't a like-for-like comparison โ Wise UAE is live and CBUAE-licensed, while Revolut UAE has no transfer product yet since it hasn't launched. Wise is significantly cheaper than UAE bank wire transfers, with a transparent fee shown before you confirm. Based on Revolut's global pricing, once Revolut UAE launches it may offer competitive rates within fair usage limits, but this is not confirmed for the UAE product โ check back once it's live, and we'll update this comparison with confirmed figures.
Wise is a globally accessible service โ your account and multi-currency holdings remain accessible from your home country or next destination. For Revolut, since there's no Revolut UAE account yet, this only applies to a European/UK Revolut account: Revolut's separate country entities mean you may need to open a new account in your new country of residence. The multi-currency features of Wise, and eventually Revolut UAE once it launches, are genuinely useful during the transition period of leaving the UAE and becoming re-resident elsewhere.
Wise has per-transfer and per-period limits that vary by verification level, account history, and regulatory requirements. For larger amounts, you'll typically need to complete enhanced verification (proof of income/source of funds). UAE Central Bank regulations also impose limits on outward international transfers from UAE-regulated platforms. For very large amounts (AED 100,000+), a traditional bank wire or specialist FX service may actually be more appropriate. Revolut UAE's limits aren't yet known, since it hasn't launched.
