The UAE's banking system is efficient, modern, and — on the surface — expat-friendly. But most people arrive, walk into the nearest branch, open whatever account the advisor suggests, and spend the next few years quietly losing money on fees and transfers they didn't need to pay. The guides in this section are written to prevent that.

There are roughly 50 licensed banks in the UAE, of which about a dozen serve the retail expat market meaningfully. Emirates NBD, ADCB, FAB, HSBC UAE, Mashreq, and Wio are the names that matter most. The differences between them are real: some require higher minimum balances to waive monthly fees, some pay noticeably more on their deposit accounts, some integrate cleanly with international transfer apps while others nudge you toward their own (expensive) FX service. None of this is explained clearly in the marketing materials — which is exactly why we built this section.

Money transfers deserve their own mention because the gap between what UAE banks charge and what specialist providers charge is, honestly, larger than most expats realise. The catch is that no UAE provider we examined publishes its FX margin — not the banks, not the exchange houses, not the apps. We checked Emirates NBD's schedule of charges and its correspondent bank charges document, Al Ansari's Key Facts Statement, LuLu's published material and Careem Pay's send-money pages, and found no statement of a spread in any of them. Which is why the only comparison that settles anything is the one you run yourself: same amount, same day, and see what actually lands.

The third area this section covers is what happens to your finances when you leave — because the question of whether to keep a UAE account, close it, or convert it to a non-resident account is one most expats don't think about until they're packing boxes. Getting this wrong can mean frozen accounts, lost funds, or scrambling to recover money from abroad. The guide on leaving covers the full picture well in advance of when you'll need it.

Everything here is independent. We don't take referral fees. What a bank publishes is what we report, whether or not it flatters them.
